Apart From Jesus, I Can Do Nothing

This poem was inspired by one of my favourite chapters in the Bible, John 15. I thought of it as I was raking the lawn. Enjoy.

I came upon a fallen branch
its leaf so green and fair
a gale is what did cause its fall
the vine it left stands near

a sadness overcomes my mien
I know the future fate
the twig being lifted from its source
will wilt and wither away

as days go by the leaves are parched
the bough is brittle and dry
life no longer in its core
its worth is for the fire

I ponder life apart from Him
the Vine who gives me life
who bids me come, in Him abide
His church His one desire

Apart from Him I can do naught
no fruit that I can give
like the branch felled by the gale
doomed to life adrift

Here I am Lord, in your care
Ne’er to leave your side
Forever grafted in the Son
my God to glorify
